Description
A gourmet grilled cheese featuring sweet apple butter, creamy melted Brie, crisp green apple, and savory ham on buttery toasted sourdough bread. Ready in just 10 minutes.
Ingredients
- 2 slices sourdough bread (about ยฝ-inch thick)
- 2 oz Brie cheese, thinly sliced with rind on
- 2 tbsp apple butter
- 2 tbsp diced ham, chopped small
- 2 tbsp diced green apple (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
- 1 tbsp butter, divided
Instructions
1. Divide apple butter evenly between two bread slices, spreading edge to edge.
2. Top one slice with Brie cheese, covering as completely as possible.
3. Scatter diced ham evenly over Brie layer, followed by diced green apple pieces. Press down gently.
4. Top with second slice of bread and press sandwich together gently.
5. Heat skillet over medium heat. Add ยฝ tbsp butter and let melt. When butter stops foaming, add sandwich to pan.
6. Cook 2-3 minutes without moving until bottom is deep golden brown. Lift corner to check color.
7. Remove sandwich from pan, add remaining ยฝ tbsp butter to pan and let melt. Flip sandwich and cook 2-3 minutes more until second side is golden and Brie has melted.
8. Press top gently with spatula. When sandwich feels soft inside, cheese has melted. Let rest 30 seconds, then cut diagonally and serve immediately.
Notes
- Let Brie sit at room temperature 20-30 minutes before making for easier melting.
- Medium heat is keyโtoo high burns bread before cheese melts, too low makes it greasy.
- Can substitute apple butter with pear butter, pumpkin butter, or fig jam.
- For vegetarian version, simply omit the ham.
- Use a panini press if you have oneโbutter outside of bread and press 3-5 minutes.
