Description
Cheeseburger Hobo Packets wrap seasoned beef patties, tender baby potatoes, sweet carrots, and gooey melted cheese inside foil packets you grill or bake in 40 minutes. You get all the flavor of a backyard cheeseburger with zero dishes to wash.
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef, 80% lean
- 1 large egg, beaten
- 1 tsp seasoning salt
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1 lb baby potatoes, halved
- 2 large carrots, sliced into 1/4-inch rounds
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 4 slices American or cheddar cheese
- Nonstick cooking spray
Instructions
1. Preheat grill to medium-high (400°F) or oven to 400°F. Tear four large sheets of heavy-duty foil and coat each with nonstick spray.
2. Combine ground beef, beaten egg, seasoning salt, garlic powder, and black pepper in a large bowl. Mix gently, then divide into 4 equal patties.
3. Toss halved baby potatoes and sliced carrots with olive oil, onion powder, salt, and pepper in the same bowl until fully coated.
4. Divide vegetables among the four foil sheets. Place one beef patty on top of each pile. Fold and crimp the foil tightly on all sides to seal each packet completely.
5. Place packets beef-side up on the grill grates or on a baking sheet in the oven. Cook 25–30 minutes on the grill or 40–45 minutes in the oven, until beef reaches 160°F and potatoes are fork-tender.
6. Carefully open each packet, lay one cheese slice on the beef patty, then reseal loosely. Cook 2–3 more minutes until the cheese melts fully. Serve in the foil packet.
Notes
Use heavy-duty foil or double-layer standard foil to prevent scorching on the grill.
Cut carrots no thicker than 1/4 inch so they soften at the same rate as the potatoes.
Assemble packets up to 24 hours ahead and refrigerate until cook time — perfect for camping.
Add 5 extra minutes to the cook time if you pull packets straight from the fridge.
Swap cheddar for pepper jack, Swiss, or provolone based on your preference.
